PRK
What is PRK?
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), or advanced surface ablation, is similar to LASIK in that an excimer laser is used to correct the patient's vision condition (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism). However, in the first step of the procedure a flap is not created as in LASIK; rather the superficial corneal tissue, the epithelium, is removed. This is performed using topical anesthesia (eye drops).
Why PRK instead of LASIK?
PRK is the better option for some patients that may not be ideal candidates for LASIK. The most common reasons include having corneas that are too thin for LASIK, previous scarring, deep-set or small eyes, and weak surface tissue.
