Lens Replacement Options

Correcting Distance Vision

Traditional cataract surgery is performed with a monofocal lens. With this lens, most people experience very good distance vision. However, most people receiving monofocal lenses still require reading glasses or bifocals to have a full range of vision.

Correcting Distance Vision with Astigmatism

Approximately 20% of cataract surgery patients have a significant degree of astigmatism. For these patients, the Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah is proud to offer three options to correct astigmatism and improve distance vision.

Toric Lens

The Acrysof Toric Lens is an astigmatic lens designed to reduce or correct a patient's astigmatism using the same technology that has been successfully used in contact lenses. Instead of using a monofocal lens, during the third step of the cataract procedure, Dr. Monroe will insert the Toric lens.

Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRIs)

Limbal Relaxing Incisions, or LRIs, refer to a technique used in cataract surgery. With this method, tiny incisions are created around the cornea in order to "relax" its curvature and improve the way light is reflected. Limbal incisions heal quickly and can cause fewer side effects than similar methods.

Laser Enhancement

Thanks to the experience of Dr. Monroe, you have the option of combining a lens implant with a laser enhancement. A laser procedure (LASIK or PRK) after cataract surgery can treat any residual need for glasses. Typically, patients would wear reading-only glasses after the laser procedure. Since laser vision correction is performed on the surface of the cornea, and with cataract surgery, the lens implant is placed behind the iris, neither area is affected by the other procedure.

Correcting a Full Range of Vision

For those who are candidates, the Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah offers multifocal lens implants with FDA-approved ReSTOR or Tecnis lenses. These lenses can provide a full range of vision - near, far, and in-between - and allow most people to function comfortably with minimal dependence on glasses.

These procedures are performed the same safe way we remove cataracts. In the third step of the procedure, one of the multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) designed to improve vision at all distances is implanted instead of the standard monofocal IOL.

Custom Cataract Surgery Package Options

Please read the following lens options carefully. After your Cataract Evaluation, we will be able to discuss with you more fully what would be the best package for you.

Presbyopia-Reducing Cataract Package:

This package is the best option for individuals who want to reduce their dependence on glasses and experience the most freedom from glasses available with today’s technology. Medicare and other insurance companies pay most of the costs associated with removal of the cataract and placement of a standard lens. In addition to any deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, the patient is responsible for paying the extra costs of the Presbyopia-Reducing Lens and the pre-operative tests necessary to achieve the best results. The patient is responsible for the additional costs associated with the Presbyopia-Reducing Cataract Package.
Includes: Multifocal Lens +/- LRIs; special testing; and 6 months postoperative follow-up care, including treatment for residual nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Also included is ORange Technology (available only at the Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah).

Astigmatic Cataract Package:

This package is designed for the individual with mild to moderate astigmatism. Limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) and the Toric Lens reduce astigmatism to enhance distance vision and improve night vision without glasses. Patients may need glasses for near tasks or may select monovision. In addition to any deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, the patient is responsible for the additional costs of astigmatism reduction and the special testing involved in the Astigmatic Cataract Package.
Includes: Toric Lens and/or LRIs to reduce astigmatism; special testing; and 6 months postoperative follow-up care, including treatment for residual nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Also included is ORange Technology (available only at the Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah).

High Definition (HD) Vision Cataract Package:

This package is ideal for patients who still enjoy driving at night and in low light conditions… and are comfortable with wearing reading glasses or with monovision. Medicare and other insurance companies pay most of the costs associated with our HD Vision Cataract Package. However, in addition to any deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, the patient is responsible for payment for the testing associated with the package.
Includes: Aspheric Monofocal Lens, additional topographical analysis and 3 months postoperative follow-up care. Also included is ORange Technology (available only at the Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah).

Standard Vision Package:

This package is the best option for the individual who does not mind wearing glasses after cataract surgery. Most of the costs of Standard Cataract Surgery are covered by Medicare and other insurance companies. In addition to any deductibles, copayments and coinsurance required by the insurance company, the patient may have financial responsibility for additional testing recommended by Dr. Monroe to achieve the best results after Standard Cataract Surgery.
Includes: Aspheric Monofocal Lens, additional topographical analysis, and 3 months postoperative follow-up care.

Clear Lens Exchange:

This package is designed for individuals who do not have cataracts but want to reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. During Clear Lens Exchange, the natural lens is removed prior to the development of a cataract. Replacement of the natural lens is performed to reduce nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and/or presbyopia. Clear Lens Exchange can be an effective alternative to laser vision correction surgery. Medicare and other insurance companies do not pay for the costs of Clear Lens Exchange; however, the Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah offers a variety of affordable financing options for the Clear Lens Exchange Package.
Includes: Multifocal Lens +/- LRIs; special testing; and 6 months postoperative follow-up care, including treatment for residual nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Also included is ORange Technology (available only at the Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah).
