One year ago I was provided the opportunity to receive Lasik eye surgery from The Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah. The physician was Jamie Monroe.
After winning the title of Miss Utah 2004, my schedule became very demanding. I was travelling to almost every county in Utah, appearing for radio and television interviews, parades, speaking at conferences and assemblies, performing on national television, and preparing for my lifetime dream, to compete in the Miss America Pageant! Looking back, I often remember the frustration that came with wearing contact lenses as well as dealing with bloodshot eyes after a long day. Wearing contacts everyday required a certain amount of care and follow up that I just did not have time for.
Thankfully, I was introduced to the Cataract and Lasik Center through Lance Huber, who was a Director for Mind Riot Productions. Due to my acting background, I had the opportunity to work on numerous television and radio commercials with him.
Upon meeting Dr. Monroe, I felt like a breath of fresh air had brushed by me. I was given careful instruction and information, along with many thorough eye checks and testing, to be sure that I indeed could be a candidate for the surgery. After several weeks of careful evaluation, I was thrilled to hear I qualified for this wonderful procedure. The day of the surgery I felt confident and grateful that competent doctors would be attending to me. The procedure took only a few minutes, and I remained quite comfortable. I left the office feeling like a different person. It was as if I was starting a new life. I could see clearly for the first time, without glasses or contacts! As a former contestant in the Miss America Pageant, I highly recommend The Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah. It was perfect for me, and it can be for you.

I decided to have LASIK surgery for my nearsightedness in September 2007 when I felt like technology had reached a high level of precision and success (especially with 3D map scans of the eye and IntraLASIK using a laser to create the corneal flap). I chose Dr. Jamie Monroe and the Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah after looking at all the other local options in Utah and Salt Lake Counties and at the recommendation of a good friend who had outstanding results himself.
My experience has been excellent so far. The Dr. Monroe and her entire staff have been excellent and a pleasure to work with. Before deciding to have the procedure, I received a free consultation and exam to see if I was a good LASIK candidate and I had all of my questions answered after being shown a video and receiving other information I needed to make the decision.
The procedure itself was painless, and the recovery was much faster than I had thought it would be. Right after the procedure was finished my vision was corrected to 20/15 in each eye even though I still had the post-procedure “haze”. There was some mild irritation for the first day, but it quickly went away, and I even went to see a movie that same night! Now, a year later, my vision continues to be 20/15 in each eye measured at three separate follow-up visits. I love not having to worry about contact lenses anymore, and my vision has been clearer than it ever was with contacts because the contacts could not correct my astigmatism like LASIK has done. Other than some mild eye dryness (which I had even worse with contact lenses) everything has gone perfectly.
I want to emphasize how well the staff treated me at Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah. Everyone from the receptionists, assistants, optometrists, and Dr. Monroe take their time to make sure I was comfortable and had all of my questions answered. Dr. Monroe, in particular, is everything anyone could ever expect from their own doctor. She is kind, patient (with all my questions!), skillful, and truly cares about you. I tell everyone that needs LASIK or any other eye care to see Dr. Monroe because I know they will be well taken care of.

I am a DJ on a local radio show as well as an artist and fitness instructor in my off time. Getting the iLasik procedure from Dr Monroe and her amazing team has very honestly been one of the most beneficial and life changing events in my experience.
I work a busy schedule and have an active life which means I have to hit the ground running from the moment I wake and be prepared for quite literally anything through the course of the day. Working in radio, delays are unacceptable. You go between a broadcast studio, a live event, and a late night concert on any typical day. For me, contacts that were dry, uncomfortable and constantly falling out slowed down every aspect of my work. Neither glasses, nor troublesome contacts were really an option for all of my favorite hobbies: camping, water sports, acrobatic fitness.
Now I tackle a long day of computer screens, club atmospheres, and lack of sleep without even thinking about dry eyes or carrying around an extra pair of contacts or the drops and solutions that come with them. My day to day life has become almost dreamlike. Waking up in the morning and automatically seeing the time on the alarm clock surprises and thrills me every single morning. Getting out the door with that much more free time and then being able to simply crawl right back into bed with no fuss has made life enjoyable. I no longer worry about fussing with contact cases, I worry about living. and life with no worries is that much sweeter.
The very best part: honestly being able to see the world around me. Every aspect of my life is so much more beautiful now that I can truly see it for what it is, not simply the impressions I settled for with my contacts. As each season begins to roll around I am amazed and often brought to tears over the subtle and detailed beauty the world has offered, yet I was never able to experience until I had the iLasik procedure.
My vision would have been deemed hopeless by some, myself included. Astigmatisms, near sightedness, far sightedness, and two massively varied prescriptions between my two eyes led me to believe I had no hope for truly improving my vision on a permanent basis. Quite frankly I was also a nervous mess about the Lasik procedure. After talking to nearly every person at the Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah, including Dr Monroe herself, they had me comfortable with the procedure and had earned my full faith in their ability to handle my eyesight as they would one of their own. In fact they treated me like family every step of the way.
At this point I don't think I can ever express how blessed I feel to have been in the hands of the team at The Cataract and Lasik Center of Utah through my iLasik procedure. They have given me an amazing gift - I can't begin to thank them for it. I would recommend the Cataract and Lasik Canter of Utah for any eyesight correction procedure, and I do on a regular basis to strangers, friends, family, and even my own mother. Take it from me; nothing is more valuable than a life that is truly in focus.

I am so amazed with the eye surgery I had done by Dr. Monroe. It is so nice to wake up in the morning and be able to see across the room! Swimming is a huge part of my life. I love being able to swim without contacts in my eyes. I don’t have to worry about losing a contact in the water. I also enjoy riding 4 wheelers and dirt bikes, but my contacts would get extremely dirty from the dust. 90% of the time I would have to throw away my contact lenses after riding. What a waste! And now, I love being able to see without my contacts! I would highly recommend the surgery to anyone who qualifies for the surgery!

I had a fantastic experience with the Cataract & LASIK Center of Utah. All members of their staff with whom I interacted with treated me kindly and professionally. I called and interviewed three other LASIK providers and the choice seemed clear to me based on their technology, professionalism, and price. During the free consultation and the pre-op phase of the process I became more confident in my decision to go with them. The actual procedure was WAY easier than I imagined. Personally by not having to deal with contacts and glasses on a daily on a daily basis not only saves me time, I don’t have the irritations and itchy eyes that I used to deal with on a regular basis. Being able to play with my two sons and not worry about breaking another pair of glasses, being able to go about the day right when I wake up without having to put contacts in is freedom that I am thankful for every day.
Professionally is where I have noticed the biggest difference. I’ve been wanting to get LASIK for years. Finally, the opportunity came. I’m so glad I took it. I wore contacts for close to 18 years and wanted to be done with them. I despised glasses even more than contacts. The iLASIK process was quick and practically painless. The doctors were extremely caring. I’ve already told everyone I know who wears glasses or contacts about Dr. Beaty and Dr. Monroe. It’s been about a year since my LASIK and I can say that it’s been amazing. No dry eyes anymore. No more popping plastic in and out of my eyes every day. No more eye solution. I save about 3-5 minutes a day on this….easy. And the amount I DON’T have to spend on eye doctors, contacts, and solution will make up for the cost of my LASIK in a few years. It was well worth it and I strongly recommend Dr. Monroe to do it.

Deciding to have my eyes corrected was a HUGE decision! After all, it is my VISION I am ‘gambling’ with. But deciding where to have my eyes corrected was never a question. My husband had Lasik surgery at The Cataract & Lasik Center of Utah several years ago and has enjoyed perfect eyesight ever since! Now, for those of you who do not know my husband, when I say he ‘does his homework’ – he really does his homework.
